First Growth screw cap; CA wines heading for shortage

In an effort to eliminate corked wines, top Bordeaux estate Chateau Margaux has been investigating the use of screw caps. Cork taint is a chemical from corks that occasionally shows up in wines, making them smell and taste musty, like wet newspaper. No telling if other tops growths are mulling the same screw cap idea. It would certainly take away some of the romance of uncorking a bottle of wine, but would solve the problem. I’ll take a screw cap if it means my $750 bottle isn’t corked.

The 2011 California grape harvest was down significantly from previous years. 47 million cases to be exact. This could lead to higher prices, particularly for bulk wine.
