Here’s to Wine In a Box

As reported by Dr. Vino (http://www.drvino.com/2010/04/06/box-wine-inventor-clos-tart/), we need to say goodbye to an innovator in the wine industry. Tom Angove, 92, passed away last week. News to me as well, Tom was the inventor of boxed/bagged wine. You know…Franzia and the like?

While we may have mocked boxed wine since its inception, who hasn’t had it at some point? It’s not my box of tea either, but I still have some fond memories. If you’ve been to a Target lately, you’ll see Franzia isn’t the only one producing wine in a box anymore (see photo). And if you’ve had a brightly labeled wine called “The Show” (and I know many of you have) or Newman’s Own wines, you might know the same company has come up with a similar concept called The Bandit…check it out.

I invite all of you to share your memories of boxed wine in the comments section below. There’s got to be some great stories out there.

So lift up your bags! Rest in peace, Tom Angove.

Ahhh, memories of boxed wine…. college, freshmen year, got an older friend to buy us a box of Franzia, drinking it (warm & in plastic cups) in the backseat on the way to a dance club in Houston, TX. Don’t think I enjoyed much of the dance club, but I remember the White Zinfandel Franzia and haven’t been able to drink it since!
